Morales and Macchi set a shorter (and unidentified) text with 2 verses from Luke and John with alleluias. It is drawn from Isaiah 9:6 the verse is from Psalm 98 and the antiphon is repeated after the Gloria Patri. The text of Puer natus speaks of the Christ Child at the outset and goes on to give praise to the Trinity, and then closes with a reprise of the first verse. Puer natus est nobis: Graduale für die Weihnachtszeit. Puer natus est nobis is the introit for the Mass of Christmas Day and, in the Extraordinary Form, its Octave. The music is somber and has a serene character that many listeners find soothing and beautiful. Its thematic material has an overall arch-shaped contour, although the notes rise and fall along the course of this structure. ![]() This Puer natus, designated as in mode 7, the mixolydian mode, was intended to serve as the Introit of the Roman Catholic mass on Christmas day. As with all Gregorian chant, there is no meter specified in the score here and the singing is monophonic. Most Gregorian chant, however, came after his time, and this particular one, Puer natus est nobis (A Boy Is Born to Us), probably appeared a century or more later. Gregorian chant takes its name from Pope Gregory I, who reigned from 590 to 604. ![]()
